Fishing Report 25 January 2022
Weather for the Week.
We got some good fishing weather
during the week however Saturday will be cool and a bit wet, beware of Thursday
if you fishing through the day, take lots of water and cool drink plus some
strong sunscreen.
Lagoon
Chatting to Wesley the other day he
told me he caught a oxeye tarpon these do occur here but have not been seen for
some years, unfortunately been top swimmers they are susceptible to gill
netting, they don’t grow much bigger than 2.5kg unlike their cousins on the west
coast that grow up to 100kg. Good catches are been had especially on the
pushing tide in the mouth are, the channel is deep so a lot of clean water is
coming in, another surprise catch was a Shad at the steel bridge.
Surf
Most of the debris has washed up but
every now and then a forest of bamboo comes passed, this seems to be occurring in
our bay and not from the banks going south or Port Dunford, with all the rain we
have been having the area in front of the Siyaya River has silted up making a
long wade so most of the guys are fishing south of the main beach. Flat fish
are not unbounded yet with only the odd one coming out, most of the catches are
comprising of shad, spotted pompano, snapper kob and baby sharks. I believe the
guys fishing at boyens are killing the baby sharks, if you see this happing
please tell them to put it back failing that contact me and I will gladly get
them arrested. In the MPA you are not allowed to be in possession of sharks or
rays and must put them back immediately. Roland yesterday fishing in front of
Forest Lodge landed a Sandy of 35kg and a Diamond of 55kg so if you are
targeting these guys you stand a chance of getting them.
Ski boat
On Sunday a boat went out and caught 20 Couta
in local waters, they were a pretty decent size at that mean while the guys
going further out are having great fun catching Amberjacks with most of them
caught on a steady retrieve on drop shot. The ramp has been dropped by about 3m
in places and this making it safer for users as you can now see oncoming traffic
and easier to exit from the beach. While the work was going on the excavator
operator made a safe passage for the boats to go past, so the ramp was never
closed. I was asked what we were doing on the beach I said “building castles
practising for the world cup”. By the
time they finished there were over 400 sandcastles on the beach.
