If you haven’t got your Diamond over the weekend at least you will have a gap on Sunday morning before you head back to get one.
River Gurnard/Bar Tail/Flat head, a good eating fish that is rarely targeted due to the spines on its gill covers, to eliminate this problem hold it by its mouth, it does have little teeth but it does not bite. This fish is often caught on artificial bait when targeting Pickhandle Barracuda and Ox Eye Tarpon and can make a real go of it, they readily take big baits Sard being a favorite. They can be found almost anywhere in the lagoon but prefer the cleaner water towards the mouth from about where the stone wall starts, if you don’t have a boat drive to Port Dunford park in the old Shangri La resort and walk down to the lagoon.
Diamonds are still popping up all over the place and some good size ones have been landed over the 70kg mark, not many other species of non eds have come to the party. Some really nice size Shad are in the bay at the moment 2-4 kg, they are almost like catching a baby Garrick (Leervis). Cob of size have been caught don’t discount them and surprisingly they have been caught in the day. The bay is also full of baby Southern Pompano they are annoying but if they are nibbling your bait you are fishing in the right place i.e. the feeding zone the bigger fish are bound to latch onto your bait. Shad head in the 30-40cm range makes a good Diamond bait.
The shop is sponsoring a Coffee Mug to the winners of the monthly mug held by the Umlalazi Ski Boat Club., we are also looking for a trophy to go with the bragging rights as to see who the best Angler is of this month. The outlook for ski boating this week end looks bleak, we have a wave period that is very short together with a strong NE, not going to be comfortable to say the least.
Up Coming Events.
Kiddie’s clinic other on the 17 or 24 Feb.
Next monthly mug will be on the 4 March.
