There have been some good sightings of the big croc near the River land Estate yet the fishing in the part of the lagoon has been great. Yet km’s apart the mouth area particularly fish towards the stone wall has produced some nice River Snapper, this fish is a master predator and can change colour to fit in with its back ground. The baits that are working well for these guys are drop shot, small mullet or glassies and artificial lures been retrieved about 1m deep. Not much news on Kob been caught they are there. On Wednesday a group from AWOL did a lagoon clean up from the end of the picnic site till the main car park, they collected 168kg of rubbish, thank you and well done. St Catherine’s School in Empangeni provide the bus so we thank them for that.
Fishing has been very slow this week on the Mtunzini beaches and we suspect it is due to the water been full of baby Squid , they are very small about the size of a pinky nail, we suspect that the fish are feeding on them, they are too soft to put on a hook. In saying that some Pompano, Spinner Sharks and Lessor Sand Sharks were caught. I heard a story about an Angler fighting a fish for 3 hrs and when they measured it, it was 2.9 m long and it was a flat fish but the person who reported the catch did not see what type it was. On Sunday we have a good dropping barometer at around 11 am, if those little Squid type things are in the surf maybe the Banks or Port Dunford should be a good place to fish.
During the week the Jet Ski guys all caught fish, Janie was telling me while they did not catch a lot of fish the fish they got was of a good size. The catches were mainly Kob with some slinger. Shyamanzi from Durban visited us last Sunday although they did not get any games fish they were hoping for they did manage to catch their quota for Squaretail Kob, Slinger and boated 2 decent size Rockcod
We are running a Spinner Shark competition on the 13 July fishing from 6am to 6 pm, you can fish for the whole 12 hours or for as long as you would like. Spinners feed around the banks and will take any fishy bait i.e. Sard, Mackerel and Bonnies etc. Entry fee is R15.00 per angler which goes towards the meat hamper to be handed out on Sunday morning at 10am.
The Honorary Officers for the Siyayi Park are having a Golf Day on the 13th of July 2019 to do some fund raising to support the good work they do. At the shop we are collecting donations to hand in at the golf day, the money will be used to buy fuel for extra anti-poaching patrols your support will be gratefully received.
